Maybe you've heard of the phrase. "a hill to die on." This phrase is used to describe something someone believes in so much that they are willing to take a firm stand on it no matter the cost or repercussions. We must be very careful when choosing a hill to die on; it must have the firmest foundation with no cracks or shifting sand lest it crumble beneath us. When we take a stand on a hill and it crumbles, we are embarrased and made to look like a fool. It's certainly good to have beliefs, convictions, and ideas, but very rarely do we have a monopoly of knowledge on any topic. This creates cracks and gaps in the hill which means it is not a hill to die on. Therefore, when we engage in conversations about these topics, we must be willing to hear different perspectives, learn, and maybe even shift our beliefs based on new information.

With the 2024 Presidential elections on the horizon, it's essential to have a level-headed perspective on politics. Capitol Hill is not a hill to die on. We are all individuals with our own priorities, passions, and beliefs. When we take to social media engaging in arguments and debates that only make our blood boil, we stand firm in our views like it's only our thoughts, opinions and faith that matter, but that's an extremely shaky foundation to take a stand on when it comes to politics. Is not everyone entitled to their own opinions and thoughts based on what they view as important? It's also crucial to realize that even with all the information and news available at our fingertips, we don't have all the facts. Furthermore, sadly there is an overwhelming amount of misinformation or twisted information meant to lead us in one direction or another making it extremely difficult to filter through all the propaganda to get to the whole truth. There are so many things we don't know, and so many false things we think to be true whether we fall on the left or the right. This creates a terrible hill to die on. So, let's stay humble and civil my friends. Talk about politics; conversate with people who hold a different view from you, but do so with humility and openness being wiling to listen and admit that you don't know everything. Maybe then we can start to look like the UNITED States of America instead of the DIVIDED States of America.

"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom."

-Proverbs 11:2
